Chapter 13
Deion seemed consumed by the hustle, and I could sense the weight of his misery. The past few weeks had turned him into someone I could barely deal with. It was clear he was tormented by Ricoâs arrest. Our days became a constant cycle of arguments from sunrise to bedtime. The tension escalated to the point where management gave us an eviction notice. Doubts crept in, and I began to question if this relationship was a mistake. Despite my love for Deion, the strain became unbearable. Something had to change.
We ended up relocating to a place on Olcott Street, and the next few weeks seemed smoother, although I still grappled with the uncertainty of our relationship. Seeking a momentary reprieve, I reached out to Nikki, asking if she could take care of Junior for a few days.
Entering the living room, I found Deion on the couch, rolling up. Sitting down beside him, I could feel the nervous energy lingering between us. Gathering my words, I took a deep breath, crossed my legs, and opened up about what was on my mind.
âListen, I think we should take a short trip, just you and me. I already spoke to Nikki, and sheâll keep Junior while weâre gone.â
âGreat minds think alike.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI felt we needed a break from the bullshit as well. How does West Palm Beach sound?â
âOkay, bae. Iâll book our flights.â
âMake sure weâre there by Thursday.â
âThursday? Why Thursday?â I questioned, giving him a puzzled look.
âNo reason.â
âOkay . . . whatever,â I said, shaking my head. I went upstairs to start checking flights. Picking the most expensive bundle I could find, I went to the top of the stairs and yelled down, âDeion, how does next Wednesday afternoon sound? We leave at ten forty-five because we have to be there two hours early.â
âThatâs cooâ,â he replied. âDid you get a rental too?â
âYeah, it was a package deal.â
âAâight.â
The week seemed to go by fast. I did all of the shopping for the trip and packing the day before, so I was ready to go bright and early. I put the finishing touches on my makeup and headed downstairs.
âDeion, take these suitcases to the car,â I instructed, making sure I didnât forget anything at the last minute.
âWhat the fuck you got in here?â
âNigga, donât do me. Just put the shit in the car, please. I will lock up,â I said as I started checking the windows and doors before heading to the car.
Pulling up to the Buffalo Airport, we parked the car and headed into the terminal to check in. Once we got our tickets and made it through security, we finally headed toward the gate.
âYou want something to drink or any food, Bella?â
âNaw, Iâm good. Iâm ready to get on this plane, though,â I laughed.
âYou ainât never lied.â

âWelcome to the sunshine state of Florida,â the captain said over the speaker. It was a perfect afternoon. We had arrived, and I could finally breathe. It was time to start our vacation.
